We are delighted to announce that Managed Technology Services Ltd in partnership with the Chelsea and Westminster Foundation NHS Trust and Freeway Medical, won the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) Award for Innovation in Products for the development of a child focused “Paediatric Mobile Workstation”. The award was made at the BIFM Awards event at the Grosvenor Hotel on 8th October. BIFM is the leading facilities management body in the UK and the awards recognise excellence in facilities management.
The award was made for a cost effective, mobile workstation for use in High Dependency Units in Hospital Paediatric Departments and addresses a multitude of features and design issues including the needs of departmental managers and nurses, the environment for the patients and visitors, cost, appearance and the associated cleaning regime.
The foundation of the success was a highly collaborative approach between ourselves as the designer, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Trust, and the manufacturer Freeway Medical. The judge’s comments were “They took a positive and innovative approach to some fundamental challenges; a non-clinical appearance, the introduction of colour and chlorine compatible finishes suitable for high intensity cleaning regimes. They did not take the simple approach of using what was currently available as best fit, they took the innovative approach and looked at how to adapt the design and the manufacturing processes to meet end user requirements. This they have achieved, working as a team, with the product fitting in perfectly to the overall objectives of the Unit and the challenging working environment in which they work.”
The workstation was purposefully designed in vibrant colours to help allay anxiety of children and parents and to improve workflow allowing staff to record detailed observations. It can be stocked with medical supplies so that nursing staff have to spend less time away from the bedside. The workstation, manufactured by Freeway Medical is a first in child centered clinical furnishings and has now been launched nationally.
This is a prestigious award to win and is a credit to all who have contributed to the development of the new workstation.
Managed Technology Services were commissioned as equipment advisors to undertake the equipment planning, procurement and commissioning of the newly opened Chelsea Children’s Hospital.
